Blackjack Rules and Basic Strategy: How to Play Blackjack

Blackjack is the most popular card game in casinos worldwide, and for good reason: the rules take minutes to learn, every hand involves a real decision, and a player who makes the right choices faces one of the lowest house edges in the casino. This guide covers the blackjack rules you need to sit at any table, followed by a simple basic strategy you can use from your very first hand.

The Goal of Blackjack

Your aim is to finish with a hand that beats the dealer’s without going over 21. You are not playing against the other players at the table – only against the dealer. If you go over 21, you “bust” and lose immediately, even if the dealer later busts too.

Blackjack Card Values

CardValue
2 to 10Face value
Jack, Queen, King10
Ace1 or 11, whichever helps the hand

A hand containing an Ace counted as 11 is called a soft hand (for example, Ace + 6 = soft 17), because it cannot bust with one more card. A hand without a flexible Ace is a hard hand.

How a Round Works

  1. Place your bet within the betting time.
  2. Cards are dealt: you receive two cards face up; the dealer receives one face up and one face down (or dealt later, depending on the table).
  3. Check for blackjack: an Ace plus a 10-value card on your first two cards is a blackjack, usually paid at 3:2.
  4. Make your decisions (see below) until you stand or bust.
  5. The dealer plays by fixed rules, then hands are compared.

Your Options on Each Hand

  • Hit – take another card.
  • Stand – keep your current total.
  • Double down – double your bet and receive exactly one more card.
  • Split – if your first two cards are a pair, split them into two hands with a second bet of equal size.
  • Insurance – offered when the dealer shows an Ace; a side bet paying 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack.
  • Surrender – where available, give up the hand and get half your bet back.

The Dealer’s Rules

The dealer has no choices. They must keep drawing until they reach at least 17. Tables differ on one detail: some dealers stand on soft 17, others hit soft 17. Standing on soft 17 is slightly better for the player, and the rule is printed on the table or in the game info.

Basic Strategy: The Simple Version

Basic strategy is a set of mathematically correct decisions for every combination of your hand and the dealer’s up-card. Following it closely can bring the house edge down to roughly 0.5% on a standard table. Here are the core rules for a typical multi-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17:

Hard totals

Your handWhat to do
8 or lessAlways hit
9Double against dealer 3–6, otherwise hit
10Double against dealer 2–9, otherwise hit
11Double against dealer 2–10, hit against Ace
12Stand against dealer 4–6, otherwise hit
13–16Stand against dealer 2–6, otherwise hit
17 or moreAlways stand

Soft totals

  • Soft 13–16 (A-2 to A-5): double against dealer 4–6 (A-2 and A-3 only against 5–6), otherwise hit.
  • Soft 17 (A-6): double against dealer 3–6, otherwise hit.
  • Soft 18 (A-7): double against 3–6, stand against 2, 7 and 8, hit against 9, 10 and Ace.
  • Soft 19 and above: stand.

Pairs

  • Always split Aces and 8s.
  • Never split 5s (treat as hard 10) or 10-value cards.
  • Split 2s, 3s and 7s against dealer 2–7; split 6s against 2–6; split 9s against 2–6 and 8–9.

An Example Hand

You bet RM20 and are dealt a 7 and a 4 – a hard 11. The dealer’s up-card is a 6, one of the weakest cards the dealer can show, because it often leads to a bust.

Basic strategy says to double down on 11 against a 6. You add another RM20 and receive one card: a 9, giving you 20. The dealer turns over a 10 for 16, must hit, and draws an 8 to finish on 24 – a bust. Your RM40 doubled bet wins RM40.

Now imagine the same 11 against a dealer Ace. Here the chart says to simply hit, because the dealer is far less likely to bust and you do not want extra money on the table. Same hand, different decision – that is the whole idea behind basic strategy.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Taking insurance. It is a separate bet with a high house edge; basic strategy says to skip it.
  • Standing on 12–16 against a strong dealer card. Against a 7 or higher, the dealer is likely to finish on 17+, so you need to improve your hand.
  • Never doubling. Doubling on 10 and 11 is where many of your profitable hands come from.
  • Playing on hunches. Streaks do not change the next card; stick to the strategy.
